Despite falling short in the natty against Michigan, they achieved their highest AP college football ranking since 1986.

This exceptional team often evokes memories of the 2016 franchise for Husky fans – the first time they made the playoff under the rules of the four-team CFP format, with many players from that team now finding success in the NFL. Social media discussions have ignited a debate: which team is the better Husky, 2016 or 2023?

Recalling the history from seven years ago isn't an easy task, but data can unmask something.

Rivals.com assessed the talent of some high school players with star ratings, with the maximum being five stars (unfortunately, neither of the Husky teams had five-star players). The 2016 team comprised 112 players, with 80 having star ratings (71.4%). In 2023, the team had 119 players, with 74 having star ratings (62.2%).

There are also differences in the distribution of star-rated players. In 2016, 46.25% of them were from the offensive team, while in 2023, this proportion increased to 48.65%.

In terms of points scored and conceded in every game, the 2016 Huskies had higher average scores and fewer points allowed compared to the 2023 team.

However, does this necessarily mean that the 2016 Huskies were superior to the 2023 team?

Many have a similar feeling – the 2023 Huskies boast a luxurious offense, while the 2016 Huskies are recognized for their robust defense. A comparison of the star players reveals that the 2023 Huskies hold a significant advantage in offense, especially in passing.

In fact, the 2016 Huskies had better average scoring per game and outperformed the 2023 Huskies in every defensive metrics. But the 2023 Huskies are stronger in other offensive statistics excluding rushing yards.

To conclude, the 2016 Huskies had more star-rated players, superior scoring, and stronger defense, while the 2023 Huskies demonstrated a higher win rate and national ranking, faced a tougher schedule, and showcased better offensive performance.
